The Animal Advisory Commission is one of the primary conduits for influencing the policies and procedures governing the delivery of animal services. The City and County collaboratively provide animal welfare services throughout Travis County. The AAC advises the Austin City Council and the Travis County Commissioners Court on compliance with Chapter 823 of the Texas Health and Safety Code (Animal Shelters), animal welfare policies, and on budget priorities identified by the Commission and the community. Additionally, the AAC promotes collaboration between interested parties relating to animal welfare in the county by identifying proactive, creative approaches to engage and facilitate communication within the animal welfare community.

Travis County makes two appointments to the AAC. One of its appointees, Mr. Ryan Clinton, has a term that is expiring on June 30, 2026. Mr. Clinton has indicated that he will not be seeking reappointment at this time. The AAC is one of thirteen agencies subject to the Uniform Appointment Process (UAP). With the departure of Mr. Clinton, the Commissioners Court issued a Call for Applications on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 with an application deadline of Friday, March 27. On March 31, the Court extended the Call for Applications with an application deadline of Friday, June 1. As of the closing of the application period on June 1 five applications were received.
