Staff Report & Agenda Item Details

Austin’s Colony is a historically underserved community in eastern Travis County that has faced significant drinking water quality issues and challenges for decades. Residents have reported concerns including discolored water, excessive hardness, elevated utility costs, and declining confidence in their public water system (PWS) provider. While the community’s PWS is regulated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), Travis County has continued to work with residents, the utility provider, state agencies, and regional partners to better understand these concerns and identify opportunities to provide assistance. Although the regulatory oversite of the PWS rests primarily with the State of Texas, Travis County plays an important role in supporting residents through intergovernmental coordination, public outreach, and environmental health initiatives. Addressing the community’s drinking water concerns requires continued collaboration among local, state, and utility partners to identify both near-term and long-term solutions that provide reliable access to safe, high-quality drinking water. Considering these long unresolved concerns, the Commissioner’s Court is considering a resolution to find potential County actions that may help advance solutions for Austin’s Colony residents.
