Staff Report & Agenda Item Details

Travis County and the City of Austin each make four appointments to the Sobering Center Board of Directors, and one additional joint appointment. Terms are for three years and appointees may only serve for a total of nine years. The Sobering Center is one of thirteen agencies subject to the Uniform Appointment Process (UAP).

On September 30, the Commissioners Court issued a Call for Applications to fill one unexpired vacancy in the seat currently held by Judge Jana Ortega. Judge Ortega is unable to serve out the duration of the term due to term limits imposed by the Sobering Center Bylaws. At the close of the application period, the Intergovernmental Relations Office received two applications. In November 2025, IGR recommended the Court extend the call for an additional period. IGR did not receive additional applications at the close of the extension period.
