When you open your monthly utility bill or look at your annual property tax assessment, you expect to see reasonable rates that reflect the actual cost of basic services. But for the hard-working residents of Wolfforth, Texas, local officials decided this week that the cost of simply living in your own home needs to go up across the board. On August 24, 2026, the Wolfforth City Council approved a coordinated series of ordinances and resolutions designed to squeeze every last dollar from the local community. Through Ordinance No. 2026-017, the council adopted an aggressive annual budget for fiscal year 2027, backed by Ordinance No. 2026-018 which establishes a high property tax rate of $0.847604 per $100 valuation. To make matters worse, they ratified the resulting property tax revenue increase via Resolution No. 2026-032. But they did not stop at property taxes. The council also approved Ordinance No. 2026-016 to hike water rates starting October 1, 2026, and Resolution No. 2026-031 to raise costs across the board by amending the city's Master Fee Schedule. This type of multi-front regulatory and fiscal squeeze is a classic example of municipal overreach that drives up the cost of living. According to policy research by the Texas Public Policy Foundation (https://www.texaspolicy.com/michael-petrick-v-city-of-austin/), municipal fees and hidden administrative costs are major drivers of local housing and living cost inflation. When cities layer property tax increases on top of utility rate hikes and revised fee schedules, they create a compounding burden that disproportionately harms low-income and middle-class families. Rather than practicing fiscal restraint or seeking competitive, free-market solutions for municipal services, local administrators choose to treat taxpayers as an unlimited ATM. By raising property taxes and water rates simultaneously, Wolfforth is attacking the basic economic stability of its residents. Forcing property owners to pay $0.847604 per $100 valuation while simultaneously charging more for water essential for daily life is a direct extraction of wealth that leaves families with less money for food, healthcare, and savings. When local governments control utility monopolies and use them to enforce rate hikes, they deny citizens the benefit of voluntary market choices, forcing them to pay whatever price the bureaucracy demands. This is why local government expansion must be fought at every turn: they will always choose to expand their own power at your expense.
