Imagine opening your mailbox to find yet another bill you cannot afford, only this time it is from the people who claim to represent you. For working families in El Paso, that nightmare became a reality on August 18, 2026. While homeowners already grapple with high inflation and rising water, electric, and gas rates, the local government decided that their own bureaucratic appetite was more important than your family's financial survival.

In a 6-2 vote, the El Paso City Council officially passed a massive $658.6 million General Fund budget and adopted an ad valorem property tax rate of $0.798000 per $100 of taxable value. This action, reported by KTSM 9 News, will extract a 6.0 percent property tax increase from the average single-family home. According to analysis by the El Paso Taxpayer Revolt, this tax hike adds approximately $105 annually to the typical homeowner's tax bill. Only Representatives Lily Limon and Cynthia Trejo stood up for the taxpayers by casting dissenting votes against this tax-and-spend package.

This is a classic example of local government insulating itself from economic reality. When private citizens face tight budgets, they cut back on spending. But when El Paso politicians face rising costs, they simply reach into your pocket. By increasing the property tax rate, the city council is directly inflating the cost of living, which will trickle down to renters and squeeze small business owners who are already operating on razor-thin margins.

The citizens of El Paso deserve better than a government that treats private home equity as an unlimited piggy bank. It is time to stand up, voice your opposition, and hold these politicians accountable. You do not hate local government enough until you realize they will gladly vote to tax you out of your own home to fund their endless expansion.
